Spinner dolphins

Spinner dolphins are known for their leaps and spins, and are a common sight. A sunset cruise on a dhoni, the traditional Maldivian boat, is the classic way to see them, often riding and leaping alongside the bow.

When and where

Dolphin trips run in many atolls, among them Ari and Addu. Early morning and late afternoon give the best chance, and many trips go out at sunset.

Watching them well

  • Let the crew keep a respectful distance, and let the dolphins choose how close they come.
  • Never chase, touch or feed them.
  • Keep noise down on deck, and enjoy them from the boat.
