Where it is
Haa Dhaalu is the southern half of Thiladhunmathi, a natural atoll in the far north of the Maldives; Haa Alifu is the northern half. It has very few resorts.
Getting there
Hanimaadhoo International Airport is in the atoll, and serves the resorts in the area; a domestic flight from Malé and an onward transfer take you to the island. Kulhudhuffushi also has a domestic airport, opened in 2019.
Under water
The atoll includes Makunudhoo and its large reef, and the water is often very clear. The far north sees few dive boats, and conditions are generally best from December to April.
On land
Kulhudhuffushi, the atoll capital, is known as the heart of the north. Next door in Haa Alifu, Utheemu has the childhood home of Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu, now a museum.
Who it suits
A stay here suits couples who want a quiet island in the far north, with clear water, Makunudhoo’s large reef and local island life close by. Our pick of Haa Dhaalu’s resorts is below. Tell us who is travelling and what matters most, and we suggest the island that fits.
