Weather
April is usually the hottest month of the year, with highs of 31°C to 32°C. It is the turn of the seasons: the first part of the month is mostly dry and sunny, but the humidity rises, and short tropical showers become more likely towards the end of the month.
In the water
The sea is at its warmest, about 30°C, and stays calm and clear for most of the month, good for snorkelling, diving and boat transfers. Later in the month, leave a little room in your plans for the weather.
In Laamu, in the south, spinner dolphins and reef sharks are regular sights. Coral spawning has been recorded in March and April in Baa Atoll, around the full moon, and in some atolls the manta season begins to shift as the plankton changes.
Surf
The southwest swells start to build, and for many surfers April marks the start of the main season, which runs until October.
Visitors and prices
Early April is still busy at many resorts. From mid-April, many start moving to their lower, low-season rates, and the islands grow quieter.
Who it suits
For beach days and snorkelling, April is one of the best months. It suits couples looking for better value, and families. If unbroken sunshine matters most, January to March is the safer choice.
