Weather
June is one of the wetter months. Rain tends to come in short bursts rather than all day, with sunny spells between, and there are around seven hours of sunshine a day, with highs of about 30°C. The wind is stronger, especially in the northern atolls.
In the water
The sea is livelier and plankton lowers the visibility, but the diving below stays rewarding, and the water is warm, at about 29°C to 30°C.
Manta season is under way in Hanifaru Bay, in Baa Atoll, where dozens and sometimes hundreds of mantas gather to feed, and whale sharks sometimes join them. Turtles are nesting, with most nests between June and August. On dark nights, away from the full moon, plankton can make the shoreline glow.
Surf
June and July bring some of the biggest waves of the year, and the wind and swell can make conditions demanding. A growing number of resorts have surf schools.
Visitors and prices
June is low season and one of the quietest months, with lower rates, deals on rooms and packages, and fewer guests.
Who it suits
June suits divers and manta lovers, travellers looking for value, and surfers. It also suits a slower, quieter stay, with the spa for rainy afternoons.
