Weather
September is often one of the wettest months of the year, with heavy showers and the odd thunderstorm. Rain tends to come in bursts, sometimes at night, rather than all day, and there are still about seven hours of sunshine a day, with highs of around 30°C. It is humid.
In the water
Visibility is lower and the sea can be rough, but the plankton brings the big filter feeders. Hanifaru Bay, in Baa Atoll, sees some of its biggest manta gatherings, and September to November is one of the best times for mantas and whale sharks. Whale sharks are seen around South Ari Atoll all year, and August to November is often named as the best time.
Surf
The swell is consistent and well organised, especially around North Malé, and September to November is one of the best spells of the surf season.
Visitors and prices
September is one of the quietest months of the year. Resorts run off-season offers, and the islands are peaceful.
Who it suits
September suits travellers who want peace and quiet, and those after luxury for less. It is also a month for manta seekers and surfers.
